چکیده

A HAND prosthesis can be useful in more than one way. It can be helpful in dealing with objects, and it can be helpful in interpersonal relations. The latter aspect is the one with which we are here concerned. The usefulness of a prosthesis in human relations is termed "social usefulness." To a wearer who considers his hand amputation a private matter, for example, and to one who does not wish to be recognized as an amputee, a prosthesis is socially useful if it cannot be recognized as an artificial device. Moreover, the amputee may be concerned that another person looking at the prosthesis should feel comfortable. In such a case, that prosthesis is most useful which does not repulse or embarrass another person but is "good to look at." In 1949 a cosmetic glove, produced at the Army Prosthetics Research Laboratory, was sent for testing to the Research Division of the College of Engineering, New York University. Investigation of the cosmetic glove led to formulation of the problem of the social usefulness of prosthetic devices in general. The methods developed during the study of the glove are, furthermore, generally applicable to

Methods for reducing energy dissipation in cosmetic gloves.

For cosmetic reasons, hand prostheses are provided with cosmetic gloves. Their pleasing appearance, however, is accompanied by poor mechanical behavior, resulting in a negative influence on prosthesis operation. Glove stiffness is high and nonlinear, and internal friction in the glove material causes energy dissipation (hysteresis). In this article, two methods for reducing hysteresis in cosmet...

A cosmetic functional hand incorporating a silicone rubber cosmetic glove.

A body powered hand prosthesis has been developed with a view to meeting some of the more c o m m o n criticisms made against currently available designs i.e. weight and cosmetic appearance. A n overall weight reduction of about 30 per cent has been achieved and the use of silicone rubber as the cosmetic glove material has resulted in greatly improved cosmesis and stain resistance. The prosthes...

Design of a cosmetic glove stiffness compensation mechanism for toddler-sized hand prostheses

The addition of a cosmetic glove to an upper limb prosthesis has a distinct effect on the cosmetic value, but its viscoelastic behaviour adds a substantial amount of stiffness and hysteresis to the system. As a result, the overall usability of the prosthesis is degraded. A novel negative stiffness element is designed to compensate for the cosmetic glove's stiffness. A combination of linear heli...

Comparison of mechanical properties of silicone and PVC (polyvinylchloride) cosmetic gloves for articulating hand prostheses.

Current articulating electric and body-powered hands have a lower pinch force (15-34 N) than electric hands with stiff fingers (55-100 N). The cosmetic glove, which covers a hand prosthesis, negatively affects the mechanical efficiency of a prosthesis. The goal of this study is to mechanically compare polyvinylchloride (PVC) and silicone cosmetic gloves and quantify the stiffness of the finger ...

Acceptability of a Functional-cosmetic Artificial Hand for Young Children. Ii.

The need for a functional and cosmetically-acceptable hand for juvenile amputees has existed for many years, In 1958 the Army Prosthetics Research Laboratory attempted to fill the void by developing a child's voluntaryopening hand, denoted as size No. 1. The Sierra Engineering Company con tracted to manufacture this hand, and two other companies (Kingsley M a n u facturing Company and Prosth...
